LWV GEORGETOWN VOTER SERVICE COMMITTEE MEETING

Date: Tuesday, October 4, 2010

Place/Time: Voter Registration Office at 5:30 PM

Present: Ralph P Edwards, Suzanne Harris, Donna Mahn, Sandra Quinn, Zane Wilson

We introduced ourselves to Donna Mahn, Director of the Voter Registration Office who was our guest.

Donna reported that Oct. 8 will be the last day to register to vote. The office will be ready for absentee voting on Friday. Preparations have been made to order cameras et al to implement the Voter ID pending approval of the Justice Dept.

In next year's election, all precincts will have laptops to speed up the voting process.

She explained why our voting machines used in voting are reliable.

November Ballot There will be no election in Pawleys Island. Georgetown will have races for City Council; Andrews for Mayor and Council. No state issues will be on the ballot.

Forum The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Men's Business Club are sponsoring a Forum for the November council race to be held at the new Municipal Auditorium on October 11. In August, I spoke to a representative of the group to see if we could cosponsor. He advised me that arrangements had already been made for presenters, candidates have accepted, questions were prepared, chairmen selected. It will be televised for the local market.

High School Voter Registration This is a state-wide effort by the LWV. Previously, Donna has done this since she came on board. She was happy to learn that the League is interested. Our committee agreed that we should be able to do this for the 2012 election. Suggested target would be August at the time of student registration. Donna suggested working through Superintendent Dozier. The LWV state league has provided a booklet for our information describing procedures for student registration.

Voter ID Donna feels that the Justice Dept will approve the law that was passed. The law is not applicable for the coming November election.

She also feels that it will be relatively easy to reach all potential voters. Statistics show that 93% of voters already have ID. The 7 % that do not break down with subtracting military and those with passports leaves a balance of about 2900 people to be contacted. The elephant in the room is that anyone who registered to vote sometime can vote absentee by mail, thus avoiding the necessity of a voter ID.

What the LWV can do: Contact churches and recruit them to seek those who have never registered to vote. Ask each church to arrange for a van or other to go the registration office. About 20 can be accommodated at one time. Need to schedule each church separately.

Webmaster Wilson and Donna exchanged web-sites

We expressed appreciation to Donna for allowing us to meet at her office.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 PM

Ralph P Edwards.
